This Week's Torah Portion Leviticus 1 - 5

Adas Israel, the Jewish Congregation of Mason City, offers up the Torah Lesson of the week.  Something for you to consider during Shabbat.  This week we begin the third of the books of the Torah, Leviticus also known as Vayikra. Here we read about the many offerings that G-d commanded the Jews bring to the alter.  But, what's this about salt?

What Can We Learn From Mirrors

Greetings from Adas Israel the Jewish Congregation of Mason City, Iowa.

G-d has commanded the Moses to build the Tabernacle and then says that he wants a copper water basin.  Where do the Jews, who have been wandering in the desert, get copper for this basin?  From an interesting source which tells us a bit about what makes something good...or bad.  It all depends on us and how we use it.  Have a look:

Purim Is....

Purim is an amazing holiday that begins at nightfall on March 4th this year.  The holiday is historic in nature as well as biblical. We celebrate the efforts of Esther, her uncle Mordecai and the choices she made in using her G-d given talents to save her people.

It's not always easy to go out of our way to help others and sometimes it's dangerous. Mordecai knew only Esther had the ability to "step up" and help out.  He told her it was her time and that this, more than beauty, more than grace was her time.

We all have choices to make.  We can stand by and watch as danger approaches or we can get involved and make a difference. This week we celebrate the choices Esther made and how those choices altered history.
